Choosing Flooring for New Residential Construction

The number of style decisions that need to be made for new residential construction is immense. From layout to drawer pulls, there must be thousands. But choosing flooring for your new construction projects can be pretty straightforward when you consider the following factors.

Hardwood

A traditional favorite, hardwoods have a lot to offer. Aesthetically appealing, intrinsically durable, and naturally warm in color as well as underfoot, hardwoods are a beloved choice for obvious reasons. Typically used in common areas not exposed to water, such as family rooms, living rooms, dining rooms, great rooms, dens, and libraries, hardwoods can work just about anywhere in a home. Choose from a variety of wood types, colors, and ways to install to make the look and logistics work for your project.

Laminate

Builders and homeowners love laminate flooring. Builders love that its so easy to install and very inexpensive compared to other flooring types; and homeowners love that laminate is so durable and so easy to care for.

CORK

Not only is cork a green flooring option, it’s great for areas that might be exposed to water on a regular basis, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms. Cork is unique for its natural cushion-feel underfoot, ability to absorb vibrations and sound, and its ability to bounce back from dents. Cork flooring comes in pre-finished tiles in a variety of finishes, making it easy to install.

LINOLEUM

Another green building choice, linoleum is made primarily from linseed oil, rosins, and wood flour. Because it’s made from natural materials, there’s little risk for adverse health affects during construction, installation, or disposal. Homeowners love that linoleum is incredibly durable, water-resistant, easy to clean, and comes in a vast array of colors and styles. Homeowners also love that the natural antibacterial properties of linoleum mean that a linoleum floor is not a hospitable environment for microorganisms. Linoleum floors are also antistatic, so there’s less chance of electric shock while standing on a linoleum floor.

TILE

Tile flooring remains popular for bathrooms and there are a lot of style and cost options. Porcelain is both beautiful and inexpensive. Glazed porcelain tile is durable enough to endure heavy traffic and there are enough color and style options to match absolutely any taste.

VINYL

Another flooring that’s popular for rooms that can experience exposure to moisture is vinyl. Vinyl flooring works well for basements, bathrooms, and kitchens. It’s easy to clean and very comfortable underfoot. With lots of styles to choose from, it’s easy to match a vinyl floor to the overall style of the home.
